Lats and Bench Press

If you’re thinking in terms of the muscles that push, those are the chest, front delts and triceps— so most people don’t understand what the lats can pos-sibly have to do with bench pressing heavy weight. The lats are an antagonistic muscle group to the pecs, just like the biceps and triceps are to each other, and the quads and hams. When one is contracting or shortening, the other is being stretched, or shortened. Because of that, the lats help you “rebound” out of the very bottom position of the rep in a bench press. This is really only something you notice when you are going very heavy, with low reps, and exploding up with the rep as we do in powerlifting.
